2013 90-Day Challenge Winner: Stacey was the $10,000 winner of our 2013 90-Day Challenge. Following spinal surgery, Stacey couldn't even pick up his keys off the floor. He was overweight, had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. There's no way he could change in 90 days, right? WRONG!

Stacey's Before Essay

Stacey EdwardsDay 1, 1/25/13 I am 45 years old. I have chronic health problems from high blood pressure and off the charts cholesterol. I have a coronary artery stent. My Third back surgery was an L4,L5,S1 fusion in June 2012. I have about 50% loss of nerve function in my right leg below the knee. I have had serious chronic pain issues that have basically dominated my life for the last 10 years.

This is my pile of excuses that I stack up and look at, the stack that keeps me from ever really committing to change because the effort is doomed to failure anyway. Right? I spend around $100 a month, with prescription insurance, on prescription meds for cholesterol,  triglycerides,, high blood pressure, pain, and depression. I would like to get rid of all of that. I am the guy who never takes his shirt off outside my home or the doctor's office. I want to be the kind of guy who does. The day I started this challenge I took my 'before' pictures in big baggy sweats, because that is mostly how I live. I was thinking that this would give me some structure to make some changes, provide some priceless help in training and nutrition, and it did not really matter who wins.

After I went home, had lunch, and thought about things for about an hour I thought "screw that, I want to win!" Why be in it if not to win it. So I went back and took the pies in just basketball shorts, and just like that I am out of my comfort zone. The hardest part of this is going to be my job. Lots of manual labor, some of it back-breaking (hence the back surgeries,) and once every 4-6 weeks I get the call pager and the job owns me day, nights, and weekends.

Sleeping and eating are a random occurrence. The bottom line is that no matter how much I work, or how many gains that I make, I will still have one leg that is basically crippled. I just want to prove that none of this can prevent me from doing pretty much what anyone else can. I believe with the right eating and workout plan, I can really make a change.

Stacey's After Essay

Wow! I can hardly believe this was possible, even looking at the photos. People tell me that I look 10 years younger. I lot of people do not even recognize me. The people I work with are amazed. My job performance has improved. My overall attitude has improved because I just feel so much better. Why did I wait so long? Well, because change is hard, and this took a lot of hard work.

Although not as much as I would have believed for the changes that I have seen. One thing that made a huge difference is having a good team. That is, a trainer to help me get the job done efficiently and without injuring myself, a good chiropractor to put me back together, and my physician to monitor my overall health.

I did not use a lot of supplements, mostly because I could not afford them. I learned to eat clean, which involved me learning to cook more for myself. Once I got past the learning stage, I actually saved money on food. I did not have to spend an immense amount of time learning everything about nutrition. I found a sound eating plan with all the rules laid out for me, and then I simply followed them. My energy level went from night to day.

This has changed my life in so many ways that I can hardly describe it. I now have more confidence. I have a positive outlook on life, and I feel like there is really nothing that I cannot accomplish with a good plan, and the right help. I dress completely differently, because I can. I went from outgrowing my 3X shirts to 1X for the first time in 15 years. My new confidence has led to a promotion with a significant raise.

I now take about half as much medicine as I used to. My blood pressure medicine has been decreased by 75%. I still live with pain, but not nearly as chronic or overwhelming as before. I was actually able to run (I used that term loosely) a 5K in under 40 minutes.

So many possibilities are opening up in my life. I can see it in the way other people react to me, and in the way my 14 year old son looks at me. It is like I got my life back. Just a year ago, after my back surgery, when I could barely walk, and putting on my shoes was like a workout, I had little hope of ever feeling good again. My outlook on life was pretty dismal. After the experience of this challenge there are two things that I would like anyone who hears my story to understand. First, if I can do this ANYONE can. And second, that no matter what the judges decide, I am a winner for having been a part of this and I would like to thank the entire Bodyworks family for making this possible.
